The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) is a not-for-profit organisation responsible for training emergency physicians, and advancing professional standards in emergency medicine, in Australia and New Zealand.

One of ACEM’s initiatives is the Emergency Medicine and Training Program (EMET), which improves care for patients requiring urgent and much needed emergency medicine services by providing education, training and supervision to the large number of doctors working in hospitals and emergency care services — particularly those in rural and regional Australia, who are not specifically trained in emergency medicine care.

The Solution

We proposed a highly-customised web mapping application, built with the extendable open source web mapping technologies of Carto and Leaflet.

This would allow us to create custom tools that would improve user experience by using state-by-state toggling, image display, and labelling, all on top of live spatial data generation.

Using these free and open source technologies would also reduce the cost of the project, and allow for continued use without the need for expensive support contracts.

Other important features built into the map system included:

Quick and simple UX, compatible across devices with standard browsers
Zero ongoing data hosting costs
Tiny hosting footprint on their existing server
Live update of data on the Carto platform
Live, up-to-date generation of hospital connections, using the Carto querying architecture
