Case Study: Invest in Victorian Agriculture

The Invest in Victorian Agriculture website was built to support the growth of Victoria’s agri-food sector. The web site provides detail information on to support the growth of Victoria’s the Dairy, Beef and Sheep, Other Livestock, Grains, Horticulture and Food Processing industry sectors as well as ten Victorian regions and a Victorian overview. It also provides an interactive map with over 100 layers of agricultural and supporting data.

We developed the website for Agriculture Victoria based on their content including the detailed and downloadable industry and regional reports. We used open source technologies including Angular, Geoserver and OpenLayers. The site was built on a configurable framework allowing content to be easily added and updated.

A key feature of the website is the interactive map. Built using open source software and open standards, it features more than 100 map layers including agricultural statistics, industry activity and supporting built and natural assets. Like the main site, the interactive map is easily configured to add new map layers, including any externally accessible layers available via standard map services.

The Issue

Agriculture Victoria wished to develop a web site to support the growth of Victoria’s agri-food sector by promoting investment in the various agri-food sectors and regions. A key information resource to be available via the web site was to be a set of detailed reports on each sector and region highlighting their unique benefits and investment opportunities.

The web site also needed to provide an easy-to-use interactive map to make available a wide range of spatial data to assist in investment planning including agricultural activity, resources, statistics and supporting natural and constructed assets.

Agriculture Victoria required that the website be externally hosted and supported.

The Solution

We built the Invest in Victorian Agriculture website alongside a design team from Agriculture Victoria. The content was developed by Agriculture Victoria, including the PDF-based information reports for each of the agricultural sectors and Victorian regions.

The site uses a configurable framework which uses a template for the agricultural sectors and regions and allows new sectors and regions to be easily added. The interactive map is also easily configurable, with map layers, including base maps, being added to a set of configuration files. Map Layers are published from Geoserver and standard WMS and WFS services and external map services can also be included.

To review content, we gave Agriculture Victoria access to a secure test version of the site, updating content as required – including deploying draft versions of the PDF reports. At the same time, we deployed more than 100 map layers, reviewed via the test web site and their content and presentation refined.

The web site is hosted in our AWS account and makes use of resources such as S3 for content storage, RDS for spatial data storage and an EC2 server for Geoserver.
