Common Ground
A new mobile optimised website developed by the Division of Resources and Energy in the Department of Industry aims to help communities better understand the mineral and petroleum assets in New South Wales and how these assets are explored and developed. Common Ground is the result of two years of consultation with community, environmental, government and industry representatives which has resulted in an interactive, plain language and highly accessible website.
Spatial Vision was part of the team which developed Common Ground – our role was the technical design and development of the web site. Spatial Vision is also cloud hosting the web site and providing ongoing support and maintenance. Common Ground was developed in a highly collaborative manner and used an Agile approach which enabled consultation throughout the development to refine the website and ensure the outcome was highly tuned to the communities requirements and delivered fully up to date with current information.
Spatial Vision designed a cloud-based architecture which integrated a number of “best of breed” cloud services for mapping and visualisation, feedback management, content management and analytics. Custom processes were developed to refresh the title data nightly from the department’s single source of truth. The website is hosted by Spatial Vision in an Australian cloud hosting centre and provides a fully load balanced, high availability solution.
Common Ground brings together a wide range of government data, allowing resource titles to be viewed in context of National Parks, reserves, Strategic Agricultural Land, Native Title areas and indicative CSG residential exclusion zones. It provides both map-based and textual information on titles and companies and sets out the applications and approvals process for mineral, petroleum and gas projects in NSW, in plain language.
Common Ground has been designed to work across phones, tablets and desktop computers and to minimise user’s data usage. It is freely available at www.commonground.nsw.gov.au.
