A framework for good practice GIS
Take part in this year’s survey and get a free copy of the results to help your Council benchmark its GIS capabilities. VIC councils only.
With more than 60% of Australia’s local government leaders considering undertaking a smart city/region project, your council needs to know where it stands with its GIS capability.
Share where you’re at in the Good Practice Benchmark Survey (open to VIC councils), and benchmark your results in the report to follow.
The annual survey is built on the GIS Good Practice Framework (GPF), which defines good practice for GIS and geospatial data utilisation across five proficiency areas.
The GPF helps your council understand your level of adoption of sector-wide accepted ‘GIS related good practices’. In addition, the survey enables everyone to see how much the whole sector is improving and compare your council against others.

The Local Government Spatial Reference Group (LGSRG) is a MAV committee of GIS leaders and officers throughout the Victorian LGA sector seeking to represent LGA GIS services as a single entity and uplift capability in an ever changing landscape. LGSRG is led by the strategic vision from its 2013 Strategy:
“Appropriate and effective geospatial capability is recognised as fundamental to council efficiency and service delivery.”
The LGSRG Committee has up to 11 officers from across the Victorian LGA sector. We aim to have a balance of metro, interface, and rural councils from across the state.
The group runs a series of “Capability Workshops” in addition to the “Good Practice Benchmark” Survey to help Councils share, network, and learn to improve their adoption of GIS best practice, and measure their progress. The events form part of a system to uplift capability across the sector.
If you wish to become a committee member please contact your local representative as shown on the map or the committee group directly.
